The beach is always well-loved by many people. This is a picture of peace and serenity. “Beach” as a theme is really common for parties, fashion, videos and… candles? Yes, it is possible. The candle making is now getting experimental about the designs to use. With candles usefulness, it could also be made in such a way that it could fit into the modern way of living- that is trendy and comfortable.

Scented Candle

Trendy- bracing some dashes of style, candles could be very good accessories for the home. In order for you to bring that fun atmosphere of the beach, why not bring that sand and sea mood at home?

These gel candles tips may let you try more options:

1.	Find a container that would best hold into form the candle you have in mind. Make sure that you will be using non-flammable containers. Use glass if available, they could show the gel, choose something with a touch of aqua blue.

2.	Plan to have the wick like about 1.5 inches from the sides and dribble a spot of hot glue on the bottom of the container you used.

3.	Stick the wink on the hot glue and let it cool down for a few minutes. Don’t use cotton as core wick, zinc is the best choice.

4.	For the gel, cut the gel wax into small parts or cubes and place it into a container and heat it up. Make sure that the heat is not too hot or too cold. 200 Fahrenheit could make it melt well.

5.	Maintain the advised temperature until such time that the wax would melt and turn into a smooth and a bit thick liquid. For more attractive effects, you could use coloring materials that would create a better effect to the product.

6.	Do not use coloring materials that would make the gel lose its transparency. Ignore the use of water-based and paste dyes as a combination. They do not complement each others components.

7.	Pour ¼ of essential oil or gel scent for more effects that would make the candle “marketable”. When pouring such, add more wax cubes if there is a “cloudy” effect on the liquid.

8.	Scents you use must be alcohol-free. For the aquatic theme, choose a “cool” scent than those which are fruity or musky.

9.	When you are about to pour the candle liquid on a container, set a level mark and make sure that the liquid will not pass over it. Put some seashell beads, aquarium gravel, sand, aqua blue glitter, pebbles, and others. Do it by layer.

10.	Make it a point to preheat the container (150 degrees). This would minimize the presence of bubbles that may ruin the form of the finished product.

11.	Then pull up the wick and be sure that it goes up in the center of the candle. Let the candle cool down for 3-4 hours. Trim the wick at about ¼ inch.

12.	You could vary the designs of your aquatic candles by mixing and matching colors and objects like starfish and clouds, sand and stars, boat prints and pebbles are just a few of the numerous possibilities.

The sea, sand, bikinis, waves, hats, flip flops… the beautiful sights one summer afternoon could be reflected by your home made candles. This could set off as a mere past time but entrepreneurial opportunities may knock on your door. gel candles are easy to make, affordable, convenient, and they could be those attractive possessions of your home.

If you are a home quilting hobbyist you know doubt have some kind of quilting frame. There are many different kinds out there with all sorts of bells and whistles. From large machine quilting frames to small lap quilting frames there is a quilting frame for everyone. I am going to take a look at lap quilting frames and try to show you reasons why you should use one. Why they are not for everyone, they are for certain people so read on to see if you fall into this group.

Thrifted Flower Quilt

Top 5 Reasons To Use A Lap Quilting Frame

The number one reason to use a lap quilting frame is that you want to be able to quilt anywhere at anytime. Lap quilting frames are highly portable so you can take them with you. Whether this is simply into another room or to a friend’s house is really up to you, the key here is that you are not chained to one spot and can move around and quilt where you want, whether that spot is in bed or in front the fire is irrelevant.

The second reason is that you do not have the space in your house to dedicate to quilting. A full size quilt takes up a lot of space and can require that you have an entire room dedicated simply to this purpose. If you do not have the space for this then a lap quilting frame is the answer to your problems. You can simply use this in the convenience of wherever you happen to be.

The third reason kind of falls in with the second reason, and that is storage. When not in use you can easily put away and store the lap quilting frame whereas with a full size one this can be much more difficult. I have placed mine in the closet, the attack, wherever and not had a problem. Large full size quilting frames present many more issues.

The fourth reason to look at a lap quilting frame is the price. They generally speaking are going to be less expensive then a full size quilting frame and far less expensive then a machine quilting frame. You can usually get one for very cheap and start quilting almost just for the cost of the quilt materials.

The last reason to use a lap quilting frame is that they are very easy to learn on. If you are just getting started you can learn how to quilt much quicker on these smaller frames then on a much larger frame. By getting farther quicker you will grow to love quilting more.

Once you are into candle making hobby you start looking for more information about interesting processes of how to make candles, about different approaches of using scents and dyes, about various tips and tricks.

Decorative Candle Making

Today, I am going to share one of my useful tricks about candles. Had you any ideas that you can make decorative candles burn with a bigger flame? And the funniest thing is that all you need additionally is a small piece of paper (the thinner, the better). Of course, you might need a candle and in this occasion those big scented candles work best.

Steps you needed to take in order for candles to burn with a bigger flame is really simple. First thing you should do is - lit the candle and let it burn while you continue. Then (while the candle is burning), take a small piece of paper. Roll your paper into the small cylinder, so that candle wick could fit it. Tear the part of this paper tube so its length would be aproximately the same length as the candle's wick length.

Moving forward, you should mount your paper cylinder on the candle wick. Therefore blow out the flame of the candle and try to fit the paper tube on the candle wick. Gently apply pressure to paper, so the paper would go deeper into the melted wax. You will notice that paper absorbs melted wax (and the thinner paper is, the more wax it can absorb).

Lastly your artificial candle wick again. Initially paper will burn of and the candle flame will get smaller. However, when fire will reach the paper mixed with wax it will start burning with a bigger flame.

Knowing how to make you candles burn with bigger fire, might not help you with how to make candles. However, this new knowledge of candles might be really useful, when you need more light and electricity is gone. However, please note that candle will burn faster and if your main goal is to enjoy the dim candle light, you should not use this trick.

Using quilting design idea and tricks will always be very helpful, no matter if you are just getting started in the quilting hobby or you have been at it for years. The quilting design idea of using a quilting frame for instance, is one that will be very helpful and there are many others as well that you will want to be aware of and which will ensure that you always have the most success with all your future quilting projects.

Raindrops Quilt Design

Quilting Tips

Of all the different quilting design idea and tips that one can learn of, here are a few that are particularly helpful. One is to use tracing paper, and the tracing paper technique is also great for auditioning quilting patterns for the quilt top. Just make sure that you have a pad of tracing paper and a pencil so that you can sketch out the pattern and erase any mistakes you may make.

This is a really great quilting design idea, one that all the professional quilters use, but there are many others that you will want to try out as well.

Performing a bleed test on your fabric before using it is another great tip that you will want to be aware of. This is very simple to do, and all you need to do is submerge a small piece of your fabric in soapy water, and make sure that you use the same soap and water temperature you would normally use.

Then all you do to finish this test off is you let the fabric sit in this soapy solution for about a half hour, and check to see what color the water is. If any color of the fabric has come off, you will see it in the water.

If the water is clear, you will still want to try one more thing and that is to remove the patch and before rinsing, place it on a wet paper towel.

Any quilting design idea mentioned here would be worth you trying out, but there are many others that will be worth a try out as well. After all, the more tips and tricks that you are aware of, the better a quilter you are going to be and the more success you will have with your quilting designs.

Remember that if you are ever looking for more tips and advice on your quilting, you can go on the Internet and find some terrific resources here. Also you can just talk to your family members and friends to get information off them, how they quilt and what advice they have to offer you.

At the end of the 19th century in Austria, Daniel Swarovski founded a company with the aim of cutting crystals automatically.

The Austrian Swarovski Crystal (pronounced swa-rovs-kee) was born. The company became enormously successful and soon expanded to various areas like producing optical products, abrasives and grinding instruments. The cutting of crystals is now one of the most wanted components in handcrafted beaded jewellery. The Swarovski crystal components are regarded as the highest quality machine cut and polished crystal beads in the world since 1892.

Since they are machine cut, each crystal is identical. Swarovski Crystals are perfectly uniform. This means that the height, width and slope are consistent. The founder Daniel Swarovski used machines that precisely cuts each crystal. Cutting hard materials such as crystal and gems, that have a hundred identical facets in several directions, is a very complex task. Each direction of the reflected light must first be calculated by computer, then this has to be simulated in 3D, optimized and ultimately translated into control programs for complex machinery. This is just part of the technology that gives Swarovski crystals their unbelievable flash and handcrafted beaded jewelry its flair.

Daniel Swarovski created its glass with a special compound that imitators are not able to copy. This special compound creates the incredible brilliance of their product. The delicate color palette is another quality that sets Swarovski crystal components apart from everything else. Swarovski crystals are also highly favored in beaded teen jewelry and in childrens jewelry. Swarovski offers many different shapes of beads and components which come in a variety of colours. Many beaded jewelry designers like to combine freshwater pearls, semi precious gemstones, and sterling silver components with Austrian Swarovski Crystals.

The Beaded Jewels Designer exclusively uses original Austrian Swarovski Crystals in her Unique designed Handcrafted Beaded Jewelry. The unique creations of Beaded Jewels Designs (www.beadedjewels.biz) are made to fall in love with.

Cupola are the easiest and most economical furnace to work with for the small foundry owner. (...)

Cupola are the easiest and most economical furnace to work with for the small foundry owner. Hobby metal casters are always on a look out for a cheaper alternative which will provide safety and yield quality results and the cupola furnace delivers all this.

The common appearance of a cupola furnace is that of a smokestack. The furnace can be of nearly any size which is perfect for backyard metal casters. Commonly, the cupola furnace is supported on four legs with a drop bottom to remove any waste from the furnace. This type of furnace does not use a crucible so the metal caster will place the metal to be melted inside of the furnace. The furnace is fitted with a sprout and runner to pour the molten material which is called a taphole. Sometimes cupolas are fitted with a way for slag to be removed. The slag tapholes are located near the back of the cupola a little higher then the other taphole. The refractory used in cupolas are usually brick with the bottom being clay and sand as this is just temporary anyways.

Cupola casting usually involves working with iron and bronze, though other alloys like aluminum can be melted as well.

The common fuel source for cupolas is coke with limestone acting as a flux. Air can be pumped in to increase the burning of the coke. When the coke is hot enough the alloy is introduced in the top of the cupola. Some will place the alloy then fresh coke and then more alloy. The molten alloy will drip through the coke to collect in the well near the taphole. When the level of the molten alloy is high enough, the taphole is opened and then alloy runs into a ladle. When enough has poured the taphole is closed with the use of a refractory plug. Remember, cupola casting does not involve a crucible.

Crucibles are traditionally used to melt the alloy and the collect it in the molten state. With the use of tongs the crucible is carried to the mold and poured. The ladle takes the place of the crucible in this regard. The metal caster pours the molten alloy which is in the ladle into the mold. The most common metal casting process is Sand casting which lends itself well with cupola furnaces.

Cupola furnaces can either be purchased or constructed. Many hobby Casting prefer to construct their own cupolas finding it difficult to find a furnace to fit their size requirements or their budget. Cupolas have been made from coffee cans large pipes and really just matters on what materials the caster is able to procure. By making your own furnace you will be able to customize it. Many will need a furnace to be small and portable. No one wants to leave a furnace out in the rain, after all. The chances are pretty good that if you are into metal casting then you have some of the technical knowledge needed to make your own cupola furnace. If not, then it is worth a shot just be extremely careful. You may want to find someone in your community that can aid you in your endeavor.

Casting Foam is a relatively new casting process compared to other metal casting procedures that date far back into antiquity. (...)

Casting Foam is a relatively new casting process compared to other metal casting procedures that date far back into antiquity. The first patent for Lost Foam Casting was made in 1958 but it was not until 1964 that what we know commonly as Lost Foam Casting was introduced.

Lost Foam Casting is a form of Investment Casting much like Lost Wax Casting. The key material of Lost Foam Casting is of course foam which is not used in other metal casting methods. The use of foam has many benefits to the artisan like ease of use and shaping and the relative inexpensive cost of the material. Each casting is going to be one of a kind since the original casting of foam is lost during the process.

The foam original will be replaced by the molten metal unlike the Lost Wax Casting where a wax mold is made of the original and then coated with a ceramic shell in preparation for the molten metal. Luckily, most foam is pretty inexpensive so the loss of the original shouldn't pose a significant financial loss, just an annoying creative loss.

Foam is easily shaped by hand held tools but even still some practice may be needed to prefect the sculpting of the material. You will need to place a sprue into the foam which will allow the molten alloy to spread into the foam and adopt the shape of the item. Packing the foam and sprue in sand is a good way to insure that the mold will retain its shape through the pouring process. The metal will replace the foam by vaporizing it, and it is really quite a sight to behold.

Though there are many who prefer to adopt the procedures used in Lost Wax Casting for the Foam casting. After spruing the foam original you are going to dip it into a solution to create a shell and then pour the metal. The goal of this is to create a cleaner surface.

Whichever method you choose is really up to you. Many use Lost Foam Casting a quick and easy way to create something when visual appearance isn't all that important. Many refer to Lost Foam as the "quick and dirty method".

As for the type of foam to use you are going to want to steer clear of anything that will give off toxic fumes when heated. Urethane foam is toxic. The popular foams to use are the polystyrene kind which is used to pack electronics and the polystyrene foam used for insulation. These foams can be found at many home improvement stores and even a few all purpose retail stores.

Lost Foam Casting is kind of like alchemy, transforming something inexpensive into something invaluable. Whenever you cast, make sure to take all proper safety precautions and wear safety gear. Always wear a long sleeve shirt, jeans, and the proper shoes. Don't forget eye and face wear and of course gloves. Never forget that you are dealing with material that can very easily harm and disfigure or worse if not handled properly.

Many first time DIY Casting begin with Lost Foam Casting since it doesn't involve mold making but if you are experienced and never attempted this method you will still want to be careful.

Lost Wax Casting is an ancient technique that has been used to create very complicated metal castings and involved pieces that would other wise be impossible either because of economic reasons or manufacturing reasons. (...)

Lost Wax Casting is an ancient technique that has been used to create very complicated metal castings and involved pieces that would other wise be impossible either because of economic reasons or manufacturing reasons. Everyone from small jewelers to large industrial foundries can use Lost Wax Casting. This process is also called Investment Casting when it is used in commercial industries. While jewelry makers are the primary ones to use the Lost Wax Casting, many others use it to achieve a number aims and goals.

Lost Wax Casting is the ideal and preferred method for artists who are interested in making items like sculptures or rings from a variety of alloys like bronze, steel, or copper. This process is quite involved but not all that complex as long as you have some kind of metal casting know-how. For anyone wanting to experiment with different casting methods Lost Wax Casting is a great option because it involves a few materials and methods that are not normally found in other methods like Sand Casting.

The most noticeable difference of Lost Wax Casting from other castings is exactly what's in the name; the wax. To use Lost Wax Casting you do not necessarily have to be an artists but some skill in sculpting might be nice. You are going to start off by creating a sculpture from wax that will be the original.

You will then create a mold of the original. The mold is usually created from plaster with latex lining to help preserve the details of the original. If this is your first attempt at Lost Wax Casting you may want to make an original without a lot of detail just to get the feel for the entire process and so you do not become discouraged if something does not work out. Remember metal casting is a skill that must be learned by research, trial, and error. Chances are that you will not be completely successful, the first time around. The original piece is usually lost after the construction of the mold. This is normal and if you do want to prevent this from happening you can create the original from material other then wax like a metal alloy.

When the mold is ready you are then going to pour molten wax, you're not ready for metal just yet, into the mold. The amount of wax needed for this step depends on the desired thickness. Once the copy is ready, you are going to remove it very carefully from the mold. You will remove any of the impurities from the copy. This is called chasing.

You will then sprue the copy. Spruing is the act of carefully placing paths that will let the molten metal in and air out. Afterwards, a ceramic shell is created around the copy. The shell isn't really ceramic but a combination of liquid silica and sand. Traditionally, and in some areas still, animal dung and dirt is used to create the shell. The choice of which shell material you want to use is up to you. The shell is hardened in the kiln and the wax melts out. If you want to reuse the wax then collect it during this step. Wax can be reused a number of times and if you are on a budget or are just trying out different designs and methods, collecting the wax is encouraged. Once the wax is gone and all that remains is the hollow shell you will want to run water through it to make sure there are no leaks. If there are then you will need to patch them before pouring the molten metal.

You are going to want to reheat the shell before pouring the metal to avoid shattering the shell. The shell is still on the sprue tree so pouring the metal is an easy process. When the metal has hardened, then break the shell carefully and remove the cast. Afterwards, it is up to you to finish the piece to your liking and preference.

The Lost Wax Casting process is an enjoyable experience but it does use a few tools that you might need to purchase before hand, like the wax and spruing tree. At the very least, you might want to try Lost Wax Casting once or twice to get a feel for it. This way you have another casting process at your disposal.

So you like to quilt, but wince when you pay for your basic quilting supplies? Not cheap, are they! Sure, it's nice to have the "latest and greatest", but wouldn't you rather be able to put that money toward the ideal fabric? Fortunately, there are some little known ways to cut down on the cost of your quilting supplies.

Have you ever noticed that sometimes everyday products are also packaged as for a special use and the price goes up? They do! A lot of things that are also sold as quilting supplies are cheap when you get them in their original format.

Containers For Quilting

If you want a special box to hold your quilt squares, a box the right size is a pizza box! Most pizza stores will give you a clean box for free (don't try to use one that used to be clean…), just ask. They might ask a small fee (usually less than a dollar) to cover their cost. A pizza box works great to keep your quilt squares smooth and flat, and no more having so pull them out of a bag and try to get them all back in order. In a box, you can leave them in order – they'll stay put.

Cheap Quilting Template Supplies

Quilting templates for drawing around to cut out shapes can be expensive! If you buy them already made, they are the most expensive, because someone else has done all the work. But you can only get them in the shapes and sizes available. If you want to buy quilting template material – a thin plastic – you can buy a kit. This is a bit less expensive, but still nowhere near free. Want it for free? Use the smooth portions of the sides of a milk carton! It's close to the same thickness of a template set, and all you need to do is wash it out and cut it apart. It is usually clear enough that you can see through the plastic to draw the shape. Because it is free, don't be too concerned about mistakes in drawing the shapes or cutting them out. It works well to use an exacta knife to cut them out, or use a pair of scissors – the plastic is thin enough that either will work just fine. What a cheap quilting supply choice!

Appliqué Paper

Appliqué paper can be bought at the quilt or fabric store. It isn't cheap – which quilting supplies are? Instead of using true "appliqué paper", get some freezer paper at the grocery store. You can draw the shape right on the paper side, and cut it out easily. It will also adhere to fabric (like appliqué paper), by using a hot iron briefly. Once they are together, cut out around your shape – a bit bigger to allow for that tuck-under edge. Then you can remove the appliqué paper and sew the appliqué onto your fabric.

Casting Jewelry is an ancient skill that has been around for as long as there has been jewelry in the world. (...)

Casting Jewelry is an ancient skill that has been around for as long as there has been jewelry in the world. The Ancient Egyptians are usually credited with perfecting the process but casting jewelry was also practiced by meso American societies and cultures located in Asia and the Middle East. The casting process is called Lost-wax and is still very popular with craftsmen who enjoy making hand made jewelry.

By the name of the process, one can guess that wax is involved of which will be lost. While the Lost-wax process is mainly used for the casting of rings and bracelets, other items such as sculptures can also be created. Investment casting is another name of this casting jewelry method and both are acceptable terms it just depends on the speaker's preference.

The Lost-wax Casting process has many benefits. When making jewelry this way, the caster will be able to make identical pieces quickly and efficiently.

There are several companies and individuals willing to cast the piece for you for a price. Many of these companies may overcharge, the cost of commerce, so if you have the resources and ability you might be better of casting your own jewelry.

Lost-wax casting involves a number of steps. If followed properly and with precision the artist will find the process enjoyable. Before you begin, you will need to come up with an idea for the piece of jewelry. Generally, the sculpture of the piece is created using wax though some prefer having a metal master copy in case of mistakes. You are going to create the mold using the original. The molds used for casting jewelry allow a great amount of detail. When the mold is finished, you are going to fill it with wax to create a wax copy which will then be coated with sand and silica. This ceramic shell will then be heated so that the wax is melted out. The wax can be reused so make sure to safely collect it during this step. The ceramic copy will be hollow and you will have to test it for holes before pouring the molten metal. Afterwards, you will lightly hammer the ceramic shell away to reveal the finished product.

The end result of the Lost-wax process is usually very detailed and exact creating a beautiful piece.

Casting jewelry can be a profitable business depending upon your skill level and creativity. This skill is diminishing as the jewelry companies switch to computerized and automatic means of creating their pieces. While this move is smart for the jewelry business as it reduces the production cost, the end result lacks a certain desirable element that hand made jewelry posses.

Casters will be able to use the mold created during the Lost-wax process a few times before a new mold has to be made. Extra care and attention has to be paid to polishing any imperfections or patching any variants during the casting process. Several things can go wrong during casting especially when you remove the mold so take care to be extra careful and attentive during this time.

Casting jewelry is a valuable skill to master and if you plan on making any money from your home foundry, this is a good place to start.

If you have read many blogs or books about candle making or better yet, if you have watched many videos about candle making, you might feel quite confident about crafting your first scented candles. However, as with all projects, you should really think about each step of the candle making process. And the first step is thoughtful preparation.

Scented Candle Making

When preparing, your first step should be to lay wax paper down everywhere where you are going to be crafting your candles. This is done in order to prevent from spilling wax. The thing is that wax is hard to remove and it can catch fire very easily. Having wax paper in right work places will allow you to relax while making your own scented candles.

Then, in the next step you could bring out all the candle making utensils that you are going to use. This will not only prevent from disasters happening, but will save you a lot of time. Put all candle making tools that you are going to use in places, so when you will be in the middle of candle making process, you will not need to think about them.

Third step is taking a little bit of aluminium foil and cover up the burner that you are going to use. This will work as another safety precaution (it is a good exercise to be as cautious as possible on your first candle crafting experiments) so that no wax will go down there and catch fire.

Once you got that all set, you can start crafting your own decorative candles. Remember, if you will be able to take care of safety measures in the preparation step, you will not have to worry about that when crafting your own candles. Then the process of candle making becomes a joyful experience.

Remember, the first step in candle making process is thoughtful preparation.

A pot in which metal is held, while melting in a furnace is called as a “Crucibles.” It is made of silicon carbide and clay graphite. (...)

A pot in which metal is held, while melting in a furnace is called as a “Crucibles.” It is made of silicon carbide and clay graphite.

Shapes Casting of crucibles: A bilge shaped crucible has the shape of a barrel. The part of the crucible in the middle region is called as a bilge. This is the widest part of the crucible and has the maximum diameter. The top of the crucible has lesser diameter than the bilge. The base of the crucible has lesser diameter than the top. As per a thumb rule, the # of a bilge crucible is the number of pounds of aluminum that it would hold. For bronze and brass, thrice the # can be held. For instance, a #5 bilge crucible can hold almost 5 pounds of aluminum and 15 pounds of brass. This thumb rule is applicable for bilge shape only.

An “A” shaped crucible has a narrow bottom and a wider top. There are straight sides that are bent outwards. The diameter continuously increases from the base to the top. As it is simpler to manufacture this shape than the bilge one, the A shaped crucible has a lesser cost. When compared with the equivalent bilge style, the capacity of the A shaped crucible is lesser.

Both the above mentioned shapes can be manufactured in Clay graphite and silicon carbide.

Properties of crucibles: A crucible must be able to bear the extremely high temperatures of the molten metal. For this, the melting point of the material used to create the crucible must be more than the melting point of the metal that in placed in the crucible. Also, the crucible material must have excellent strength even in the white hot state.

For melting metals like aluminum and zinc, a steel crucible made at home can be used. The reason is that the melting point of aluminum and steel is lesser than steel. In this case, the interior surface of the steel crucible undergoes flaking or scaling. Due to this scale, the molten metal is polluted. The thickness of the crucible walls decreases fast. Hence, a coating of marcote-7 is applied to the inner surface of the steel crucible. The use of steel crucibles is okay if the contamination due to the scales is not regarded serious.

Materials used: To construct a crucible, the usual refractory materials (i.e. carbon bonded silicon carbide and clay graphite) can survive the extremely high temperatures of work of a foundry. In addition, silicon carbide is a very durable material.

Some of the clay graphite crucibles can be used up to 2750 degrees Fahrenheit. Some A shaped crucibles are used up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. These crucibles can be used to handle gold, silver, bronze, brass, aluminum and zinc alloys.

The A shaped crucibles have a rough surface finish and there are dents along the rims. However, this roughness does not interfere with the performance by any means.

While handling crucibles, correctly fitting tongs must be used. In correct tongs can lead to damage or total failure of the crucible. In between the base of the furnace and the crucible there must be a disk of cardboard or a coating of Plumbago.

Crucibles are placed inside of the furnace where the metal is placed and then melted. The crucible then collects the melted alloy which will then be poured into the model. Since the crucible will be holding metals melted at extremely high temperatures the crucible will need to be created from very strong material. The durability of the crucible will add a certain aspect of safety to the metal casting process. Using a crucible that is low in quality can result in shattering, which, let's face it, is never ever a good thing.

Any Crucible at any given moment can shatter or fail which is why using appropriate safety gear at all times is so important. In order to handle the crucible which will be red hot you will need to wear boots, jeans, and gloves. The tools for lifting the crucible from the furnace and then the tool for tilting the crucible so that the molten metal will pour easily into the mold will vary crucible from crucible. Those that make their own crucible will be able to create them in an identical manner so the same tools can be used. The idea of these tools is to make sure that the crucible can be safely and securely lifted and poured. You will never want to directly touch a hot crucible, even with gloves.

For those that either can not or will not make a home made crucible can buy a crucible and tools from any of the online stores. A common material for crucibles is graphite as it can withstand the molten metal. Many who cast metal will prefer using graphite crucibles as it can prevent impurities from being introduced into the gold or other precious metal being used. Another option is the Silicon Carbide crucible.

Silicon Carbide is a great though expensive alternative to the graphite crucible. A crucible made from Silicon Carbide can handle rougher treatment then graphite so if you are not particularly gentle with your toys then this is a terrific option.

Yet another option available to the home foundry is creating your very own crucible. Many don't really recommend this since commercially created crucible tend to be more durable and will instill a bit more confidence in the casters. It is, however, possible to create a crucible as many of us will at one time or another.

If you plan on creating your own crucible then keep this in mind. There are a few areas of home metal casting where you should not cut corners, these definitely include crucibles. The crucibles job is the transportation of incredibly hot molten metal which can easily exceed 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit and is really the only thing between you and this metal. When you plan on melting metals with extremely high melting points you will need crucibles made from material that will cost a little extra. Spend that money and do so gladly since it is just a small price to pay for your safety.

Crucibles should only be used to melt one kind of metal. If you have always melted aluminum but decide to try melting brass then you will need a new crucible. This is done for safety reasons. Remember, a crucible is not meant to last forever. Always check your crucible before use to make sure there are not cracks or imperfections if there are then do not use that crucible.

Crucibles come in a variety of sizes and can be made from a variety of materials. It all depends on the type of metal to be used and the size of the job. Never skimp on the price of this tool and always follow safety guidelines and use common sense when dealing with a hot crucible.

Brass Casting, as the name suggests, involves the use of brass as the molten metal. Metal Casting can be carried out by the way of sand casting only. Sand casting can be defined as a ‘cast part’ produced by formation of a mold from a mixture of sand and pouring the casting liquid (mostly molten metal) into mold. Then the air-cooling of the mold takes place. After the solidification of metal, the removal of mold takes place. The metal used here is brass. It is a known fact that brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. Hence, to be precise, the molten metal consists of two elements.

Sand molding consists of two types- ‘Green sand’ molding and ‘air set’ molding. The first one consists of a blend of moisture, clay, silica sand and other additives. The second one makes use of dry sand bonded to all the above materials except moist clay, by the way of using an adhesive, which is fast curing.

At times, there is a placing of a temporary plug (in the mold cavity) to enable the formation of a channel to pour the fluid which is to be molded. The molds of the second type, i.e. the air-set molds result in the formation of a 2-part mold. The two parts are bottom and top. The tamping-down of the sand mixture takes place as it gets added. Many a times, the final assembly of the mold is vibrated to get the sand compacted and get the unwanted voids filled. Then the molten alloy (brass) gets poured into mold. After the solidification and cooling of brass, the separation of casting from sand mold takes place. Normally, such molds are one-time usable.

Patterns: A designer or an engineer provides the design of the object to be produced. On the basis of this design, a pattern is built by an efficient pattern maker by the use of plastic, metal, or wood. Polystyrene can also be used. The DIY Metal Casting would get contracted during solidification. Non-uniformity can also result out of this. Therefore, the size of the pattern should be a bit larger as compared to the final product. ‘Contraction Allowance’ is the name given to this difference. Brass enters the mold cavity through a runner system including sprue and other feeders.

Molding box: A molding box having multiple parts (also known as casting flask whose bottom and top halves are called drag and cope respectively) is constructed for receiving the pattern. There may be an addition of sand to nullify the defects introduced due to the pattern getting removed.

Chills: To have a proper control over metallurgical structure and solidification of brass, plates of brass, or any other metal can be placed in mold. A hard structure may get formed at these places. Chills can be used for promoting directional solidification as well.

Design Requirements: The thing in making and the pattern corresponding to it should be designed in such a way that every stage of process can get accommodated. One should be able to take away the pattern without causing any disturbance to molding sand.

You may or may not wish to add text to your scrapbook page. (...)

In this article you find some practical advice on scrapbooking for beginners.

Text
You may or may not wish to add text to your scrapbook page. You may want to just
write captions below the pictures. You may want to add your own stories or poems. You may wish to add journals describing the day to day life of your baby or your child's accomplishments. Text can be used as either a focal point or simply as a supporting piece.

Text may be hand written. Or, computer fonts, letters, text, or three-dimensional images can also be printed or cut and pasted onto the page. In this way, various styles, colors, textures, and visual text effects are possible.

Tags
Tags are a little added touch of professionalism that adds to the overall well thought out look to your scrapbook. Tags can be used for accents, captions, and thought bubbles as well as dedications. The design of your tags will depend entirely on your personal requirements and desires.

Thus, tags can be big or small, square or specially shaped, white or colored, textured or plain.

Also, tags need not be made of paper. Some of the most interesting tags are made from fabric, wood, and furniture odds and ends found around the house. Be creative.

Pre-made tags are available at most craft or office supply stores.

Embellishments
Your own unique embellishments add a special personal touch to your scrapbook pages. Embellishments can be used as the main focus of your page, to highlight items, or as borders. Embellishments can range from simple items such as stickers and ribbon to more complex techniques such as adding faux beads and silver accenting. Use your imagination and creativity.

Embellishments need not be expensive. Odds and ends that you have from other craft projects work just fine. Be on the lookout for sales on fabric, plastic flowers, lace, beads, and whatever else takes your fancy. These items will no doubt come in handy on your next scrapbook project. Also keep a sharp eye out for deals in second hand stores and garage sales. Often used items can be ripped apart and the pieces reused literally for only pennies.

Patterning
How can you organize your scrapbook page to best show off your mementos and embellishments? You can place everything in the center of your page, place a single focus item in the center, or divide the page into sections adding items to each section. You may also decide to lay the items out in a standard recipe or calendar layout.

Shapes also make interesting placement patterns. Common shapes include squares, circles, hearts, and stars. However, you can also place items in object patterns such as mountains, trains, or Christmas trees.

The shape you select for your scrapbook will depend entirely on your theme. For example, a logical shape for a wedding or Valentines Day scrapbook is a heart. A nice shape for a Christmas scrapbook is a Christmas tree. You might make a cake pattern for your niece, the pastry cook. Let your imagination and creativity be your guide.

Various ready made patterning templates are available on the market.

Let's take a look at the primary ones, and a few extras. Some hand quilting supplies are even cheap!

Basic Sewing Supplies You Need

When quilting, as when sewing, there are basic supplies. Scissors are an important supply whether hand quilting or sewing a dress. Quilters often use a rotary cutter, mat, and ruler when cutting pieces, but snipping threads is best done with a small pair of scissors. At the sewing machine, pieces will need to be cut apart, and at the quilt, threads will need to be cut, too.

Also, be sure to have a seam ripper. While none of is want to make mistakes, they seem to be inevitable, especially when we're learning a new skill. It's smart to have a seam ripper on hand and plan to use it than to not have one and be surprised or disappointed in ourselves when things don't go perfectly. Sometimes we need to do a little "reverse sewing".

Of course, thread is a necessary supply for hand quilting. You will need basic, ordinary cotton wrapped polyester to sew at the sewing machine (though it can be done by hand), to put the pieces for the top of the quilt together. After the top is finished, you will need quilting thread for hand quilting the quilt. Quilting thread is sold right by the regular thread, but it is labeled as quilting thread. It is thicker, more substantial than regular thread – so that it can withstand the tugging and pulling of the quilting process as well as hold up to everyday use. Quilting thread is now available in many colors, but the most popular, by far, is white.

Quilting Supplies

Once your quilt top is made, you'll need other quilting supplies for hand sewing. You'll need a way to mark where on the quilt you'll be hand sewing. Many quilters use a pencil for this, but there is also a new product called a pounce pad that does this quickly and easily. The pounce pad is filled with powder. The pad is then wiped over the top of the stencil of the pattern you'll be quilting. This leaves powder lines of where to quilt. After quilting, the lines can be erased by ironing or steaming, or (for some types) brushing the chalk away. Usually, white powder is used, but there is also a blue powder for when white won't show well enough against your fabric.

Stencils can also be a vital part of quilting. A stencil is an easy way to mark more intricate patterns than just following a seam. Many stencils are available at quilting stores, both brick and mortar and online, so you will probably find the style you want.

Green Sand: Green sand is also called as foundry sand or molding sand. This is utilized for sand casting. When this sand is oiled or moistened, it has a tendency to pack well and retain the shape. (...)

Green Sand: Green sand is also called as foundry sand or molding sand. This is utilized for sand casting. When this sand is oiled or moistened, it has a tendency to pack well and retain the shape. Green sand is a mix of pulverized coal, water, bentonite clay and sand. Out of these four components, the biggest part is that of the sand. There are several proportions of these four components. The different ratios are used to adjust the surface finish, moldability and capacity of the hot molten metal to degas. The prime use of this sand is in the metal casting. The coal is usually called as sea coal in foundries. The amount of sea coal is less than 5 percent. It undergoes partial combustion when there is molten metal present and this causes offgassing of organic vapors.

Green sand is stored in flasks (as the casters call the container). These are boxes that do not have a bottom or lid. This box is divided into two half parts and these are connected together. These halves are called as the top or cope and bottom or drag flask.

As per its name, green sand is not green in color. The word “green” is used as it is used in the wet state.

Casting Sand: Some DIY Casting sands are oil bonded and foundry mix sand. This is a mixing of oil, resin and sharp fine silica sand. Such a mix can be utilized in sand casting of all varieties of metals. Some casting sands consist of 20 percent more oil and resin as compared to other brands. The objective is to ascertain the best mix for maximum green power and the best finish for the surface, that is possible.

The oil bonded sand is a substitute for water bonded green sands to be used for casting sand. The advantage over traditional, older sands is that as water is absent, the sand does not steam like the traditional sands. This sand is more secure to use than green sand. The reason is that potentially explosive quantities of steam are not generated. Due to this dearth of steam generation and the smooth texture of the sand, the oil bonded sand results in a smoother surface finish. The novice can use these sands and get professional results.

Use of casting sand: The same techniques, patterns and tools that are used for water bonded sands can be used for oil bonded casting sands. As the sand has better adhesive properties, there are fewer hassles with loose sand in the impression. The difference is that water cannot be used to manage loose sections. However, as the self adhesion is better, there are fewer problems of crumbling.

When the oil comes in contact with molten metal, it does not burn. When the castings are being shaken out, it is advisable to take off the sand that is burned. This sand that is burned can then be mixed again in the pile of fresh sand. It reabsorbs oil and works very well. After repeated use of this sand, the oil gets depleted. In this case, around 30W of non-detergent motor oil can be used to reload the sand with oil.
